Breaking Barriers in Tech: Ignite Nebraska & Google’s Council Bluffs Data Center Pilot

In the spring of 2025, Ignite Nebraska embarked on an ambitious pilot with one of the most recognizable names in technology—Google. The challenge was clear: could Ignite-trained candidates, many from nontraditional backgrounds, meet the technical and professional standards of Google’s entry-level data center roles in Council Bluffs?

In just 93 days, the answer was a resounding yes.

Building the Pathway

The pilot began on March 10, 2025, when Ignite’s Executive Director met with Google’s Operations Manager. Within weeks, the two organizations were aligning on urgent hiring needs, role expectations, and candidate preparation.

By April, Ignite had translated Google’s job requirements into custom curriculum—study guides, mock interviews, hardware exercises, and troubleshooting scenarios—all designed to equip candidates for the rigorous interview process.

Measurable Outcomes

Talent Pipeline

  • Ignite submitted three candidates within six weeks of the initial meeting.

  • All advanced to interviews.

  • One candidate ranked #1 overall in Google’s interview scoring and secured a final “fit” interview.

Employer Alignment

  • Google’s recruiter and hiring manager were engaged throughout, providing real-time feedback.

  • Ignite demonstrated agility, adapting training materials in days to meet employer needs.

Community Impact

  • Participants came from nontraditional backgrounds, often facing systemic barriers to entering tech.

  • Ignite provided free wraparound support, coaching, and direct access to opportunity.

Individual Success

  • One candidate was hired full-time.

  • Their income increased by over 300%, enabling them to successfully transition off state assistance.

Why This Matters

This pilot was more than a hiring initiative. It was proof that when employers, community organizations, and individuals work together, new pipelines of talent can be created that benefit everyone:

  • Employers get prepared, motivated talent.

  • Participants access careers they might never have thought possible.

  • Communities see stronger families and reduced reliance on public assistance.

What’s Next

Ignite Nebraska and Google’s pilot shows what’s possible when barriers are broken down and access is prioritized. As we look ahead, Ignite will continue to scale these employer partnerships—ensuring that the future of work includes everyone ready to rise.
